photo of a cab being set up for a simulation image says 'vertical motion simulator'.
Welcome to the Vertical Motion Simulator, or VMS. Here the simulation pilot sits in a structure called a cab, which simulates the cockpit of an aircraft. Different seats, controls, and instruments can be installed, which allows us to simulate planes, helicopters, and even the space shuttle. On the left you see the top of the cab being removed to change the interior.

This is the inside of the cab during a simulation. The scenery can show many different locations, the flight instruments have accurate readings, and the controls feel as they would in real flight. There is realistic sound, and the seats even vibrate like they would in an airplane or a helicopter.
