Simulator Designs Tower

Engineers with NASA's Kennedy Space Center used a simulator at a NASA's Ames Research Center to determine design specifics for a planned control tower that will monitor space shuttle landings at Kennedy, according to an agency statement.

On June 19 and 20, Kennedy engineers evaluated prospective control site locations, heights and orientations under various weather conditions using Ames' FutureFlight Central simulator, the statement said.

The simulator provided realistic, detailed day and night scenes to help Kennedy researchers design a safe, efficient tower.

This autumn, Kennedy will break ground on the new tower, which is expected to be completed in 2003, the statement said.
